Halifax, Nova Scotia: July 2018

I am about to take my first international trip to Halifax, Nova Scotia. Though this is a business trip, I am going to use any downtime to see and experience as much as I can. The trip will begin on Tuesday, July 17 and I will return home on Monday, July 23.

6:10 AM.

  • Managed to fall asleep around 9:30 last night.
  • Alarm went off at 3:45. Printed out my boarding passes for this leg. Left apartment by 4:45 (I felt like I was pushing it since boarding for flight begins at 530).
  • PTI is only 5 miles from my apartment and no traffic at this time of morning.
  • Parked car in long term lot close to terminal.
  • Found out at ticket counter that my flight has been delayed by 1 hour (no biggie since layover in Newark was going to be long)
  • TSA screening went smoothly.
  • Grabbed a breakfast sandwich and an iced tea. (I must remember: RECEIPTS RECEIPTS RECEIPTS!! I am so used to just balling them up and trashing them.
  • Flight Delayed until 7:30 AM
    7:30 AM
  • Flight from Greensboro, NC to Newark, NJ

8:45 AM

  • Just arrived in Newark. First flight went well (but the landing gear on that plane sounds in need of a brake job.)
  • TROUBLE: Connecting flight to Halifax CANCELLED!!
  • Spoke with airline,  that they could give me is a 2:10 flight to Montreal, then another connecting flight to Halifax. I went with it.
  • Proceeded to terminal via tram and waited…
  • Flight was on the verge of cancellation due to weather in New York. Delayed several times during my wait, but we finally boarded at 4:30 and left at 5pm.

5:00 PM

  • Flight from Newark, NJ to Montreal, QC

6:00 PM

  • Pretty nauseating flight; lots of turbulence.
  • Unable to get through customs in time for the 6:45 flight to Halifax.
  • Airline unable to find any other flights other than a 7:35 flight tomorrow morning. I booked it.
  • Found a vacant room at a nearby Holiday Inn.
  • Disappointed that I will have to miss some of the morning presentations at my conference. Hope to make it there by noon tomorrow.

1:50 PM – Montréal–Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport

  • Woes continue. Arrived at terminal to learn that my 7:45 reservation had been cancelled. (CRAAAAPPPP!!!!)
    • After a while on the phone with customer support, the most I could get out of them was “Unspecified Technical Error”. They would not give further information.
    • I suspect the glitch had something to do with the crazy way the ticketing agents had to go about rescheduling and tying in different carriers (United vs Air Canada, Westjet, etc.)
  • Only flight they have available for Halifax doesn’t board until 3:35 PM, and arrives in Halifax at 6:10 PM.
  • I will be missing the entire first day of the conference, but I think I can catch up.
    • I made contact with my colleague (who somehow had no travel issues yesterday???) and he is sending me the items covered via email.
  • Spending the day in the terminal, killing time.

  • Landed in Halifax. My coworker met me at the airport to drive me to the hotel.
  • Checked in to room and went for dinner at a local pub
    • The name of the pub was “The Press Gang”, I learned that the owners chose this name since Halifax had a history of using Impressment to fill their naval ranks. Wikipedia article here.
